What measurements are Aussie comforter set sizes?

If you've ever stood in a bedding aisle staring at a label that says "Queen" and wondered whether it'll actually fit your bed, you're not alone. Comforter sizing in Australia - whether you call it a doona, quilt, or duvet - follows its own standard that doesn't match the US, UK, or Europe. Here's a breakdown of what each size actually measures.

Quick Reminder:

There's an important distinction to understand that will sound obvious but is worth a reminder: your mattress size and your comforter size are not the same. A comforter is always larger than the mattress it sits on, because you need overhang on the sides and foot of the bed for coverage.

As a rule of thumb, many retailers actually recommend sizing up - using a Queen comforter on a Double bed, a King on a Queen, and so on. Other retailers, like us here at Quillora, upsize sets for extra overhang for you - by adding 20 cm extra to the ends of the comforter for that luxury "draping" aesthetic.

Australian Comforter Sizes Table

Australian Comforter Sizes

Standard doona/quilt dimensions in centimetres

Size Dimensions (cm)
Single 140 × 210 cm
Double 180 × 210 cm
King 245 × 210 cm
Super King 270 × 240 cm

* Dimensions are standard Australian sizing. Individual brands may vary by a few centimetres - always check the product listing before purchasing.

Single Comforter Size: 140 cm x 210 cm

The standard single comforter is designed to fit a single mattress (roughly 92 cm x 188 cm). The comforter extends well beyond the mattress on both sides, which is ideal for a solo sleeper who likes to wrap up. It's a bit of a tight fit for adults but works perfectly for a kids' bedroom or a spare room.

Double Comforter Size: 180 cm x 210 cm

A double comforter sits on a mattress of around 137 cm x 188 cm. You'll notice the length is the same as a single (210 cm), but the width jumps considerably to 180 cm. It's technically sized for two people, though the overhang on each side is modest. If you and a partner want real coverage without fighting over the doona, sizing up to a Queen or King comforter set is non-negotiable.

Queen Comforter Size: 210 cm x 210 cm

The Queen is the most popular size in Australian homes, and it shows in how it's sized - it's a square at 210 cm x 210 cm. The mattress itself is around 153 cm x 203 cm, so you get a solid overhang all around. This is the sweet spot for most couples, offering good coverage.

For those reading considering a Quillora comforter set: keep in mind that our Queens measure 235 cm to 210 cm for extra drape.

King Comforter Size: 245 cm x 210 cm

A King comforter measures 245 cm x 210 cm and is built for a King mattress (roughly 183 cm x 203 cm). The extra width gives you generous drape down both sides of the bed. The length stays at 210 cm - same as Queen - so if you're particularly tall, you won't gain extra foot coverage by going King.

Again if you're in the market for a Quillora comforter set: keep in mind that our King comforters measure approximately 255 cm to 210 cm for extra drape.

Super King Comforter Size: 270 cm x 240 cm

The Super King is the largest standard size available, at 270 cm x 240 cm. This one also gains extra length compared to the King, making it notably more substantial all round. Super King beds sit at around 203 cm x 203 cm.

A Few Things Worth Knowing

Australian sizes don't match international ones. If you're buying from an overseas retailer, never assume the name matches. A US Queen comforter is a different size. Always check the centimetre dimensions directly.

Brands vary slightly. The sizes above are standard, but individual manufacturers may differ by a few centimetres. Always check the product specs before purchasing. For example, Quillora's comforters are 20 cm extra on the sides for extra drape, so you don't need to worry about upsizing!

King Single exists too. You'll notice it's not in this list. That's because there's no dedicated King Single comforter - most retailers recommend using a Double comforter on a King Single bed, which works well given the size difference.
