Caring for Your Quillora Comforters
Taking proper care of your cotton comforters will ensure they remain soft, colourful, and cosy for years to come. Here's everything you need to know about maintaining your cotton and down alternative bedding set.
Before First Use
- Thread Trimming: Your comforter may arrive with a few loose threads. Carefully trim these with scissors (don't pull!) to prevent them from unravelling.
- Initial Wash Required: It is recommended but not essential to give your new comforter a gentle wash before using it for the first time.
Washing Instructions
- Machine Capacity: Ensure your washing machine can accommodate the volume of your comforter. Front-loading machines typically work best.
- Commercial Option: If your home machine is too small, professional laundering is recommended.
- Settings: Use a gentle cycle with cold water to preserve your cotton's integrity and prevent shrinkage.
- Detergent: Choose a mild detergent free of harsh chemicals and brighteners.
- Separate Washing: Always wash your comforter separately from other items.
- Colour Caution: Wash with similar colours to prevent dye transfer.
- Thorough Rinsing: Make sure to rinse well to remove all soap residue.
Important: Always wash your comforter and pillowcases separately from other items. Wash with similar colours to prevent dye transfer.
Drying Your Comforter
- Line Drying: For best results, line dry your comforter. This prevents damage to the filling and fabric.
- Low Heat Option: Alternatively, tumble dry on low heat.
- Weight When Wet: Remember that comforters become exceptionally heavy when wet. Your washing machine should mitigate this in its final cycle. Use multiple clotheslines or sturdy drying racks.
- Complete Drying: Ensure your comforter is completely dry before using or storing to prevent mildew.
Ironing Instructions
We feature our comforters in their "natural" look - personally, we love it! Some folks prefer to iron their bedding smooth, and if you're one of them, read on. Ironing cotton takes care due to this fabric's sensitivity to heat.
- Steam Option: To start, we recommend you try steam. A light steam setting can help remove creases. Steam helps relax fibres without direct heat contact. You can also consider hanging the comforter in a steamy bathroom - such as after a hot shower - to naturally release wrinkles.
- Cool Setting Only: If you choose to iron your comforter, exercise caution. Use the lowest heat setting on your iron (typically the "cotton" setting with 1-2 dots).
- Avoid Direct Contact Where Possible: Try not to iron directly over filled sections, as this could damage the down alternative. Instead, iron only the outer fabric edges where there is less filling.
- Section by Section: Work in small sections, and never leave the iron in one spot for more than a few seconds.
- Test First: Always test on an inconspicuous corner before ironing a visible area.
What to Avoid
- Bleaching: Bleach should not be used as it will weaken the cotton fibres.
- High Heat: Never use high heat when washing, drying, or ironing your comforter.
- Soaking: Extended soaking can cause excessive weight strain on the fabric.
Seasonal Care and Storage
- Regular Fluffing: Shake out your comforter regularly to maintain even filling distribution.
- Sun Exposure: Occasionally air your comforter in indirect sunlight to naturally freshen it.
- Breathable Storage: When not in use, store in a cool, dry place.
- Compression-Free: Avoid storing under heavy items that could permanently compress the filling.
Extending Comforter Life
- Spot Cleaning: For small stains, spot clean with a mild soap solution rather than washing the entire comforter.
We hope you enjoy your Quillora comforter for many years to come!
