Tricks to Make Your Comforter Look Extra Plush

Why doesn't mine look like that?

On the website your brand new comforter set looks plush as a cloud bed, but when you put it on your own bed...flat as a pancake. What gives?

We've assembled all the tips you need to bring out the most from your bedding in your day-to-day usage. It's less elusive than you think!

Trick 1: The Industry's Best Kept Secret is Mattress Toppers

One of the industry's best-kept secrets for achieving that ultra-plush comforter look is to build height from below. A quality mattress topper not only adds a layer of comfort but creates the perfect foundation for your comforter to rest on top of.

Why it works: A plush mattress topper (especially memory foam or down alternatives) adds significant height to your bed profile. When your comforter drapes over this elevated surface, it naturally creates more dimension and a fuller appearance. The extra height prevents the comforter from sinking flat against the mattress, maintaining that coveted loft even in the middle of the bed.

Pro tip: Choose a mattress topper that's 4cm - 8cm thick for maximum impact.

"High loft" cotton mattress toppers like this are our favourite. This is a major reason why Quillora comforters are 20cm wider than standard- to ensure they still comfortably drape over your bed once you add a high loft topper to the equation!

Trick 2: Double Up with Two Comforters

Don't have a mattress topper? A second comforter can work just as well. Tuck it under your fitted sheet if you run warm when you sleep, or if it's the depths of winter, tuck it under the comforter you want to be visible!

How to: Layer a lighter-weight comforter beneath your main comforter, or a thick comforter beneath your fitted sheet. This added bottom layer creates a foundation of loft while your main comforter provides the beautiful top layer that catches the eye.

Pro tip: Another option is to add on a luxurious throw blanket folded at the foot of the bed. This is often an opportunity to both add layers and increase the inviting "cloud bed" feel, as well as pick a colour that breaks your colour theme up. For example, we love to throw a white blanket over our purple comforter set.

Trick 3: The Shake and Fluff Technique

Even the highest quality comforters can appear flat after extended time periods spent in their packaging or storage. Proper fluffing technique is essential for maximum plushness:

Remove the comforter from packaging and give it 24-48 hours to expand if it's been compressed. We made the decision not to compress our comforters before we send them out to help keep them plusher.

Shake vigorously from different corners to distribute the filling evenly.

Snap the comforter like a sheet by holding two corners and quickly lifting upward, then letting it settle naturally on the bed.

Massage the comforter with your hands in a gentle circular motion to separate any clumped filling.

Pro tip: For comforters with synthetic fill, placing them in a dryer on low heat with a few tennis balls or wool dryer balls for 10-15 minutes can dramatically improve fluffiness. Just be sure to check the care label first!

Trick 4: Master the Hotel Fold

Part of making your bedroom resemble a hotel is to become familiar with their folding techniques.

The Hotel Fold: Fold the top quarter of the comforter back on itself to create a thick, inviting band at the top of the bed. This doubling-up creates the illusion of extra loft where it matters most - right where someone would pull it back to climb in. We also like to fold just the topmost part of the comforter in on itself like in the image here, making use of the reversible side. A single fold is always recommended, but a double fold can significantly improve plushness as well.

The Triple Tier: Layer your comforter with the sheet folded down first, then the comforter folded to mid-bed, topped with a coordinating lightweight blanket or throw folded at the bottom third. This layering creates visual depth and thickness.

Pro tip: Consider using a slightly oversized comforter for your bed. The extra material creates natural folds and waves that look incredibly plush and provide additional material to wrap yourself in for ultimate cosiness. You can generally upsize your comforter to achieve this - though take note, Quillora comforters are already extra-wide and don't need any upsizing!

Trick 5: Rely on the visual effect of Plush Pillows

Don't underestimate how much work your pillow selection does for a hotel aesthetic. An abundance of plush pillows, and the firmness of the pillows you choose, all contribute to this dynamic.

Create a backdrop: Place 2-4 large European pillows against the headboard to build height. These are the large square pillows 65x65cm across.

Layer forward: Add your sleeping pillows in front, then 2-3 decorative pillows of varying sizes but substantial thickness to the front. Consider varying the colours and textures as appropriate for your set - for example, we like adding neutral beiges to our beach themed comforter set, or blushing pinks or crisp whites to our Lavender Vale set.

Choose firmer pillows: Pillows come in various types - our preference is to look for cotton covers with microfibre filling in a "firm" variant when we're trying to dial up the plush factor. Firm pillows are typically stuffed to fill out a pillowcase cover satisfactorily.

Pro tip: When selecting decorative pillows, choose inserts that are slightly larger than the cover for that overstuffed, plush appearance.

Centrepieces

Themed centrepiece cushions: Another trick we love for styling is to include at least one bolster cushion, themed throw, or oversized lumbar pillow centred in front of your arrangement. These uniquely central pillows can really draw the eye and tie the set together a bit like "the cherry on top". Some of our sets come with this centrepiece matching throw included - such as the Beach House comforter set and the Lavender Vale comforter set.

Closing Thoughts: Plushness Starts with Quality Bedding

The ultimate trick to melt-into-the-sheets bedding is to get quality bedding. Authentic materials look the part - which is a huge part of why Quillora has resisted using polyester covers for our bedding. Natural, quality cotton looks softer and more inviting because it actually is - keep this in mind when choosing the parts of your bedding that touch your skin and meet the eye.

One last word of the wise: a little bit of maintenance will keep your comforters looking their plushest year round. Try to:

Fluff daily by shaking lightly when making the bed.

Air regularly by pulling back covers for a few hours daily to allow moisture to evaporate and filling to maintain its loft.

Follow proper cleaning instructions for your specific comforter type to prevent filling from clumping or shifting.

Store properly in breathable bags when not in use.
